An armored truck is a truck with armor plating, usually used to transport cash to/from banks. They may also carry other valuables such as jewelry for retailers. It’s also possible for armored trucks to be used to protect important people such as celebrities, politicians, or dignitaries. The purpose of such a vehicle is to protect the cargo and the personnel within it. Therefore, it must possess several unique features that other types of trucks don’t have.
The bodies and windshields of these trucks are usually bulletproof and meant to withstand extreme heat. The floor, ceiling, walls, and doors of armored vehicles are made of steel. To prevent rusting and corrosion, galvanized or stainless steel are typically used. In addition, the steel is usually fortified to make it more resistant to bullets. This can be done by adding chromium and nickel during the forging process or through heat treatment. Several layers of glass, sometimes alternated with layers of bullet-resistant optical plastic, are used for the windows.
There are other design features that are important to an armored truck. A steel bulkhead usually separates the driver’s compartment from the cargo hold. Specialized doors that automatically lock are used in these trucks and must be reopened electronically from the inside. This is done by the driver, who never leaves the vehicle when on duty. Locked boxes or drop safes hold valuables on the truck. Baffled roof vents allow ventilation and protection due to the fact that the windows do not roll down. Independently controlled air conditioning and heaters are also part of most armored vehicle features.
