Truck mounted stripers: a truck used to paint lines on streets. They deliver various types of paint application, depending on needs, budgets, and terrain. Delivery systems can be pump or pressure tanks. Types of applications include air atomized spray, ribbon extrude, and screed extrude that can be flat or profiled.
Truck mounted stripers use a special kind of paint to mark streets and roads. It’s called thermoplastic paint, and it starts out as a powder when it’s at room temperature. It’s melted in a thermoplastic heater-mixer and then placed in the tank of the striper. Some larger stripers may have heating-mixers inside their tanks. Heating systems can be fueled by either diesel or propane. From the tank, the heated paint is pushed into a marking bucket that’s insulated.
There are two types of machine marking, depending on the truck mounted striper you get. Some deliver markings by air spray. This method isn’t always especially precise. Compressed air sprays the pain onto the paved surface. An advantage to this method is that the paint is delivered in a thin, atomized form. This delivers a smooth, even layer. However, the paint spray can be easily blown by the wind, leading to messy markings.
The second type is high-pressure airless spraying, and it works by spraying the paint through an airless pump. Unfortunately, the paint isn’t delivered in fine layers like the air spray, but the lines tend to be more precise in this manner. This type of delivery works well if you need a thicker line. Sometimes an added attachment is available on truck mounted stripers that spreads an even layer of tiny glass beads into the paint as it’s being delivered to the road.
