    A transfer truck is a dump truck towing another dump bed behind it, similar to train cars. A regular dump truck contains an open-box bed that has hydraulic rams in the rear that are able to lift the front of the bed. This lets the load inside the bed to be dumped on the ground.

    The trailer being hauled can carry a range of items. It’s common for transfer trucks to haul gravel, sand, asphalt or other construction aggregate. Other examples of loads this type of truck might contain include snow, soil, triple mix, brick, wood chips, or stones. The most such trucks can typically carry is a total of 25 tons.

    The second dump bed is often referred to as B Box. It can be powered by an electric motor, hydraulic line, or a pneumatic motor. It moves on small wheels from its frame into the empty main dump truck, often called A Box. This configuration allows you to maximize your payload, but still have the accessibility and maneuverability of a regular dump truck. It’s also possible to have a triple transfer train, which a third transfer trailer called a C Box. These have the ability to tow up to 284,000 pounds.
