Commercial Truck Trader Spotlight: Kenworth W990

The Kenworth W990 is a popular choice for truckers, especially for car haulers, because the tractor’s height can be modified to accommodate the car hauler trailer. In addition, it can be configured for heavy-duty hauling, with some models rated to pull up to 240,000 pounds. The W990 is also a favorite among drivers who appreciate the traditional aesthetic of the truck’s classic long-hood design.

We took a closer look at the Kenworth W990 to highlight the features that make it a great option for those who think fondly of the “good old days” of truck design, while also demonstrating all of the modern aspects that make the W990 competitive in today’s market.

History of Kenworth

The roots of Kenworth date back to 1912, beginning with Gerlinger Motors, a car and truck dealership in Portland, Oregon, founded by brothers George T. and Louis Gerlinger, Jr. The company evolved into a truck manufacturer, introducing the Gersix in 1915.

The Gersix is considered one of the first trucks with an inline six-cylinder engine. In 1923, the company was purchased by Harry Kent and Edgar K. Worthington, who used a combination of their last names to create the Kenworth moniker.

Like other manufacturing companies, the Great Depression, which started in 1929, created new challenges for the company, leading it to diversify into building buses and fire trucks. Kenworth also became the first American company to install diesel engines in production models, in addition to offering sleeper cabs for drivers.

Between 1941 and 1945, Kenworth’s Seattle plant produced components for bombers and M1 wreckers to contribute to the American efforts in World War II. M1 wreckers were heavy-duty 6×6 wrecking trucks used by the U.S. Army during both WWII and the Korean War to tow and recover disabled military vehicles from the battlefield.

Kenworth is now part of PACCAR Inc., which also owns Peterbilt Motor Company.

W990 Specifications

The 2025 standard version of the W990 features a PACCAR MX-13, 12.9-liter engine that can produce 405 to 510 horsepower and generate 1,450 to 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque. The 12-speed PACCAR automated transmission provides smooth-as-silk acceleration and downshifting that’s easy on both the cargo and the driver.

There is also an optional PACCAR MX-11 engine available that produces 430 horsepower and 1,150 to 1,650 lb.-ft. of torque. It offers slightly less power but better fuel mileage.

Driver  Safety

For driver comfort and safety, the W990 features Torque Assisted Steering, an adaptive technology with an electric motor control system attached to a hydraulic gear. It can be tailored to the driver’s preference with three levels of assistance, controlled by a switch on the dash.

This improves the driving experience by allowing the driver to adjust torque based on vehicle speed, easing effort at low speeds and firming things up at higher speeds to provide a consistent feel on the road.

Technology Features

The cab also includes a 15-inch, high-definition, fully digital display that features basic information such as speed, engine RPM, fuel level, brake air pressure available, coolant temperature, and oil pressure.

It can also show axle temperatures, torque output, the status of the air filter, suspension load, and information about the brake system while applying the brakes. Additionally, it can display the local speed limit in case drivers miss a sign and want to ensure they’re staying within proper limits.

There is also a separate NAV+ HD in-dash display that provides traffic and weather condition updates, GPS map updates, and has four external camera inputs for better visibility when changing lanes or turning. It is also equipped with 3G/4G access for wireless connectivity.

Comfort and Accommodations

The W990 also offers an optional Driver’s Studio that provides optimal comfort on long-haul overnights. The studio includes a 180-degree swivel passenger seat and rotation table for two, a premium audio system, a swivel TV mount, a drawer-style refrigerator, and space for a microwave.

It also features a full-size wardrobe, ample storage space for gear and clothing, and multiple 120-volt outlets for plugging in basic accessories to make your home away from home more customized.
